A good daylight plan gives people useful light without direct sun falling into their eyes or across their screens. It also keeps the difference between bright window areas and darker inner areas under control.

Useful daylight has a measurable range. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s ECSBC 2024 defines useful daylight illuminance as daylight between 100 and 2,000 lux, measured at a work plane 0.8 m above the finished floor.

This range shows why daylight needs control. A desk can receive plenty of light and still feel uncomfortable because the sun creates a bright patch, a sharp reflection, or a hot seat.

Start by asking where direct sun enters during working hours, which desks face or back onto windows, how far useful daylight reaches, and which rooms can sit away from the glazed edge.

The answers should influence the floor plan before furniture quantities and cabin sizes are frozen.

Use natural light through space planning

Place regularly occupied work areas where they can receive daylight and an outside view. Storage, server rooms, print areas, and other low-occupancy functions can sit closer to the darker core when the floor plate allows it.

Workstation rows usually perform better when computer screens sit at a right angle to the window. A screen facing the glass can pick up reflections. A window directly behind the screen can create a hard brightness difference between the monitor and its background.

Keep solid rooms away from the glazed edge where possible. Cabins and meeting rooms built along the full window line can block daylight from reaching the open office.

A suitable layout may place shared rooms near the centre and use glass fronts for cabins that need perimeter access. This gives enclosed rooms privacy while letting light pass towards inner workstations.

Reception areas benefit from daylight, though the logo wall needs controlled brightness so signage stays readable.

Focused work areas need soft, even light. Place screens sideways to the windows and provide adjustable blinds near desks.

Conference rooms need shading for presentations and video calls. A room with full-height glass may need both solar-screen blinds and a blackout layer.

Use glass partitions where privacy and acoustics allow. Clear glass carries the most light. Frosted bands can protect privacy at eye level while leaving the upper section clear.

Clerestory glass is glazing placed above a solid wall or door. It can carry daylight into meeting rooms, cabins, and internal corridors without giving a full view inside.

Keep the upper light path open. Full-height storage, dark panelling, and solid cabin walls near windows can stop daylight before it reaches the next work zone.

The height of a partition matters as much as its material. A 1,200 mm workstation screen allows more light across the floor than a full-height solid divider.

Surface colours matter too. Pale ceilings and light-to-medium walls reflect more daylight than dark finishes.

ECSBC 2024 uses default reflectance values of 70% for ceilings, 50% for internal walls, and 20% for floors when actual material data is not available for daylight modelling. These are modelling defaults.

A light ceiling can spread brightness across the floor. Workstation screens in soft grey, beige, or muted fabric also create gentler contrast beside bright windows.

Glossy laminates, polished stone, and glass tabletops can produce sharp reflections. Matt or low-sheen finishes are usually easier to use near workstations.

Combine daylight with office lighting

Natural light changes through the day and across seasons. Electric lighting should fill darker areas and maintain comfortable working conditions when daylight drops.

Divide the office lighting into zones. Fixtures near the windows can operate separately from those in the centre.

Daylight sensors can dim or switch window-side lights when sufficient daylight is available. The electrical designer should choose sensor locations and control settings according to the floor plan, operating hours, and budget.

Plan controls by daylight zone. One switch for a large open office often leaves lights running beside bright windows because the inner desks still need them.

A practical plan may divide an open office into perimeter, middle, and core lighting circuits. Meeting rooms, cabins, and breakout spaces should have separate controls.

Use task lights where detailed work requires them. Keep ambient lighting even across circulation paths and inner workstations.

Conference rooms may need separate settings for discussions, presentations, and video calls. The lights closest to a display should run on a different circuit so the screen remains clear.

Visit the office during normal working hours. An evening-only site visit can hide the strongest glare and heat problems.

Record the window conditions before drawing. Note each window’s direction, sill height, head height, glass type, external shading, surrounding obstruction, and blind condition.

  2. Photograph each glazed side in the morning and afternoon.
  3. Mark likely direct-sun and high-glare areas.
  4. Place computer screens perpendicular to the main windows.
  5. Keep tall opaque rooms and storage out of the main light paths.
  6. Select glass film, blinds, or shades after checking orientation.
  7. Approve ceiling, wall, and workstation finishes on one material board.
