Cable-management options for modular workstations

Choose how cables reach the workstation

Start with the base-building survey. Floor boxes, raised access floors, perimeter trunking and ceiling poles suit different building conditions.

Floor boxes work well for clusters away from walls. Their position must match the furniture centreline and stay outside chair wheels and walkways.

A raised floor allows services to move below removable panels. Keep key panels accessible and record every change.

Perimeter trunking works for desks near walls. Avoid long leads across walking routes.

A ceiling pole avoids cutting some finished floors but remains visible and must coordinate with lighting and fire systems.

OSHA identifies projecting floor outlets and cords in walking areas as office hazards.


Plan power, data and charging points

Prepare a point schedule by seat. Count normal power, UPS power, data outlets, telephone points, USB charging, display connections and spare capacity.

Keep normal and UPS sockets visually identifiable. The electrical consultant should confirm circuit loading and protection, while the data consultant confirms network requirements.

For shared workstations, use a central raceway with repeated outlet modules. Leave spare capacity and access for replacement.

For non-sharing workstations, an individual tray or compact raceway may be enough.

Height-adjustable desks need a vertical spine or cable chain that works at the lowest and highest positions.

Avoid overloaded adapters and connected power strips. High-load appliances such as kettles and heaters need circuits designed for them.

Approve and inspect the cable layout

Build one sample workstation and connect the actual equipment. Check socket quantity, adapter fit, cable length, raceway closure, chair-wheel clearance, foot room and spare capacity.
