Office furniture materials explained: particle board, MDF and plywood

22 September 2026 by

Particle board, MDF and plywood can all produce good office furniture when the material matches the application. Particle board suits repeated modular units. MDF gives smooth painted and routed surfaces. Plywood handles screws and demanding joinery well. This guide compares their construction, finish, moisture behaviour, fabrication and cost.

How particle board, MDF and plywood are made

Particle board uses wood particles bonded and pressed into sheets. MDF uses finer wood fibres, giving it a dense and uniform structure. Plywood uses thin wood veneers bonded in alternating grain directions.

The internal structure affects fabrication.

MaterialInternal structureCommon office use
Particle boardPressed wood particlesModular desk tops, storage and repeated panels
MDFFine compressed fibresPainted shutters, routed panels and decorative fronts
PlywoodCross-layered wood veneersJoinery, heavy-use cabinets and moisture-prone areas

BIS lists IS 12823:2015 for pre-laminated particle boards, IS 12406:2021 for general-purpose MDF, IS 303 for general-purpose plywood and IS 710 for marine plywood.

Urban Office’s modular workstation range uses 25 mm pre-laminated particle-board and MDF tops with MS square legs. Visit our Modular office furniture page.

Compare the materials by performance

Choose by load and finish. Particle board provides consistent thickness and a flat surface. Pre-laminated sheets arrive with the decorative face already applied.

It suits workstation tops, storage sides and repeated modular units. It needs sealed edges and properly selected fasteners.

MDF’s uniform core cuts and routes cleanly. It suits painted cabinet shutters, routed reception features, decorative panelling and veneered panels.

MDF is usually heavier than particle board of the same thickness. Raw edges need careful sealing.

Plywood’s cross-layered veneers provide good screw holding. It suits heavy-use cabinets, joinery altered on site, pantry storage and selected executive furniture.

Sheet quality varies by species, core, adhesive and manufacturing control.

Pro tip: Ask the supplier to expose one finished edge on the sample. The core often tells you more than the decorative face.

Choose the right board for each furniture item

Standardise applications across the project.

Furniture itemPractical material choice
Modular workstation top25 mm pre-laminated particle board with metal support
Painted reception frontMDF with suitable paint system
Standard storage cabinetPre-laminated particle board
High-use drawer boxPlywood or tested board system
Pantry base cabinetSuitable moisture-resistant plywood or board
Executive deskParticle board, plywood or MDF based on finish
Decorative routed wallMDF
Heavy shelvingPlywood or supported engineered board
Mobile pedestalPre-laminated board or powder-coated steel

Urban Office uses 25 mm workstation tops with metal frames, which support the board and reduce unsupported spans.

Use the grade specified for moisture exposure. Seal cut-outs and lift pantry cabinets away from direct floor water where the design allows.

Check board grade, emissions and sourcing

Ask for current documents. The purchase order should name the standard, grade, thickness, manufacturer and finish.

  1. BIS licence details where applicable.
  2. Product test report.
  3. Board thickness and density.
  4. Moisture-resistance grade.
  5. Formaldehyde-emission information.
  6. Surface-laminate specification.
  7. Warranty.
  8. FSC claim where specified.

GRIHA promotes low-energy and recycled interior materials and asks teams to retain product sheets, certificates and quantity records.

FSC chain-of-custody certification tracks certified or reclaimed forest material through manufacturing and distribution.

A green logo on a sample does not confirm that the ordered product carries the same claim.

Compare costs and approve the specification

Compare finished furniture cost rather than sheet price alone.

Board typeIndicative 18 mm, 8 × 4 ft sheet price
Raw general-purpose particle board₹1,800–₹3,200
Pre-laminated particle board₹2,800–₹5,500
Raw MDF₹2,200–₹4,500
Moisture-resistant or finished MDF₹3,500–₹7,000
General commercial plywood₹3,500–₹7,000
BWP or marine-grade plywood₹5,500–₹11,000+

These are Urban Office planning estimates for India in 2026. Plywood or raw MDF may also need laminate, veneer, paint, adhesive and labour.

Record the core, thickness, front finish, back finish, edge band, hardware, frame and moisture protection for every furniture type.

Keep one uncut labelled sheet and the signed finished sample until installation passes inspection.

Frequently asked questions

Is particle board suitable for office workstations?

Yes. A supported, pre-laminated particle-board top with sealed edges works well for modular workstations.

Is MDF stronger than particle board?

MDF has a denser, finer core and machines more cleanly. Performance depends on grade, thickness, load and support.

Is plywood always better for office furniture?

Plywood offers good screw holding and suits demanding joinery. Modular furniture may be more economical in certified pre-laminated board.

Which board is best near a pantry?

Use a grade suited to moisture exposure, seal every edge and protect the unit from leaks and floor water.

How can we verify office furniture board quality?

Ask for the manufacturer, BIS details, grade, thickness and test reports. Match delivered labels with the purchase specification.
